A Lifetime of Making Flutes

For Keiichi Toyoda, flutemaking has been a lifelong journey.

More than fifty years later, he is still at work, always trying to make each flute a little better than the last.

This is the story of Keiichi Toyoda and TOYODA Flutes.

In Japan, there is an independent flute workshop dedicated to handcrafted instruments.

It is the workshop of Keiichi Toyoda, a craftsman with more than fifty years of experience.

Today, he continues his work, drawing on the knowledge and skills he has developed throughout his career.

Making a fine flute requires both technical skill and artistry. The maker needs to understand the metal, dimensions and mechanics of the instrument, while also considering its sound, feel and what musicians look for in a flute.

From Yamaha to TOYODA

Keiichi Toyoda began his career at Yamaha in 1970.

During his 22 years there, he was selected as one of five craftsmen for a programme in which each maker was responsible for the entire flute-making process. He also specialised in handcrafted headjoints, making more than 2,000 during his time at Yamaha.

In 1992, he co-founded Flute Masters with two colleagues and continued his work developing and making professional flutes.

Then, in 2015, his career took an unexpected turn.

Problems with his thumbs forced him to leave Flute Masters and step away from flutemaking. For a flute maker, his hands are his most important tools.

Six months later, as his hands gradually recovered, he returned to the workbench.

Later that year, he founded TOYODA Flute (豊田フルート) under his own name.

From Yamaha to Flute Masters, and finally to TOYODA, his journey had already spanned more than four decades.

With his own workshop, Toyoda could bring together everything he had learned over those years — his experience, technical knowledge and understanding of sound — and apply it to flutes bearing his own name.

A Flute Maker's Workshop

TOYODA is an independent Japanese flute workshop dedicated to handcrafted instruments.

Toyoda takes a personal approach to his work, giving careful attention to each flute he makes.

Flutemaking requires precision, but experience also plays an important part.

Measurements and mechanisms can be carefully adjusted, while the sound, response and feel of a flute are shaped by the maker's knowledge and judgement.

After more than five decades in the craft, Toyoda continues to bring that knowledge to every flute that carries his name.
