The headjoint is where the sound begins and one of the most delicate parts of the flute.
With proper care, it will respond more consistently and develop a warmer, more stable tone over time.
Wooden Headjoint
A wooden headjoint is highly sensitive to moisture. Careful maintenance is essential to preserve both tone and response.
Care recommendations:
During the first 6 months, avoid excessive moisture
Limit daily playing time to around 25 minutes
Apply sweet almond oil inside the tube twice per week (before playing)
How to apply oil:
Use a soft cloth or cotton swab with a small amount of oil. Apply a thin layer inside the tube, leave it for 1–2 hours, then gently wipe away any excess.

Notes:
No need to oil the exterior regularly
If the lip plate loses its shine, light care is sufficient
After 6 months, reduce oiling to once per week
Avoid frequent wiping of the embouchure edge

Metal Headjoint with Wooden Lip Plate
This type combines the stability of metal with the warmth of wood.
The wooden lip plate still requires careful attention.
Care recommendations:
Avoid excessive moisture during the first 6 months
Limit daily playing time to around 40 minutes
Apply oil once per week, or when the wood appears dry
Before oiling:
Clean gently with a slightly damp cotton swab, and ensure the surface is fully dry.
How to apply oil:
Apply a thin layer of almond oil using a cotton swab. Leave for 1–2 hours, then wipe off any excess.

With time and care, a wooden headjoint develops its own character
warmer, deeper, and more personal.
